My expectactions were pretty high and that is why I'm so disapointed with PUBLIC ENEMIES. Altought is one of the best films of the year so far (only THE HANGOVER and STAR TREK deserve some respect), PUBLIC ENEMIES fails to be one of the great Oscar contenders. Probably, not even with 10 nominees for best picture.
Let's start with the script: something is missing, the story of John Dillinger is much more interesting. Johnny Depp, for the first time in his career, is unable to create a character. Johnny Depp is Johnny Depp with a scar and looks like John Dillinger. But he didn't nail the character. I'm not even talking about Christian Bale and that accent. Marion Cotillard is fine and it was a great choice for a Hollywood entrance. And Billy Crudup as Hoover seems to be the only believable one. Sorry, I can't forget Bale's accent... it's that bad.
There are two things that were great: cinematography and score. And probably the costume design.
Tomorrow, I'll see UP. Let's raise the competition.

ReplyDeletedude...I haven't watch this film, But I did saw "UP" and all I can say is, Disaster!, I just didn't feel Pixar on that film, for me it was a small studio trytin' to copy some Disney and Pixar, didn't love the film...NOT Oscar chances. Sorry Pixar!
