
Actress Charlize Theron celebrates her 34th birthday this friday. She was born in Benoni, South Africa. After a tumultuous childhood, Theron started out as a ballet dancer but got into acting after an injury. When she was 18 she went to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career which soon flourished with roles in Tom Hanks' "That Thing You Do!", Taylor Hackford's "The Devil's Advocate" and Woody Allen's "Celebrity". Theron then expanded her resumee with parts in "The Astronaut's Wife", "The Cider House Rules" and "The Italian Job". Her big break came in 2003 when she starred in the indie-drama "Monster" as serial killer Aileen Wuornos, who was sentenced to death and executed in 2002. Theron was showered with awards for her intense performance: she won several critic's awards, the Golden Globe, SAG-Award, Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival, Independent Spirit Award and eventually the Best Actress Oscar. Theron received one more nom in 2006 for "North Country" and will star this year in "The Road" as Viggo Mortensen's wife. Future projects include "The Danish Girl" opposite Nicole Kidman and she is rumored to star in "The Ice at the Bottom of the World" with Meryl Streep. The Oscar-winner is also in talks for the leading role in "Atlas Shrugged", based on Any Rand's novel about a railroad executive, a role Angelina Jolie was once attached to.
