THE 10 BEST MOVIES OF 2011

Here they are: the best movies of 2011 in my humble opinion.

# 10. HORRIBLE BOSSES
America loved BRIDESMAIDS too much, when actually the best comedy of the year was HORRIBLE BOSSES. And it wasn't even necessary to put some girls in a spanish restaurant. Check Jennifer Aniston's performance.

#9. MONEYBALL
The movie is even better than we thought. Brad Pitt gave his best performance since BABEL. Jonah Hill also scored an Oscar nod, but I still don't understand why.

#8. WARRIOR
Did somebody notice this movie? You should. It's very different from THE FIGHTER and they are both very good. Nick Nolte totally deserves his Oscar nod.

#7. MIDNIGHT IN PARIS
Woody Allen is back and we loved to see his Paris. After New York, London, Venice, Barcelona, Allen returns to Paris to do what he can do best: give a city the best leading role.

#6. PAGE ONE: A YEAR INSIDE THE NEW YORK TIMES
The best documentary of the year is also one of the best pictures of the year. The future of print media deserves this discussion.

#5. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO
Stieg Larson's masterpiece was a great beginning, but David Fincher really also put his mark on this great story.

#4. SUPER 8
How could this movie be completely ignored by all the best 10 ranks is a mystery to me. Spielberg and Abrahms made a great unforgettable movie.

#3. THE HELP
Yes. The movie is great, the performances are great. But actually, my favorite was the one given by Jessica Chastain. Viola Davis is the Oscar frontrunner, but Meryl Streep is the one who should get the award.

#2. HUGO
It's easy to fall in love with this Scorsese's masterpiece. We don't care if it is not the usual Scorsese movie. It's a love letter to cinema: to his past and to his future. But...

#1. THE ARTIST
... the best love letter to the cinema is THE ARTIST. A masterpiece and one of the best movies that will win the Oscar for best picture. For the first time since THE RETURN OF THE KING, the Academy will finally give the Oscar to the best picture of the year.

MERYL'S NEXT OSCAR NOD IS...

The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that Academy Award®-winning actresses Julia Roberts (EAT PRAY LOVE) and Meryl Streep(THE IRON LADY) are attached to AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, based on the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning play by Tracy Letts, and directed by John Wells ("Shameless", THE COMPANY MEN). The announcement was made by TWC Co-Chairmen Harvey and Bob Weinstein.
Said Roberts, "After seeing Meryl Streep's mesmerizing portrayal as Margaret Thatcher in THE IRON LADY, it has me even more excited and proud to co star with her."
"I'm delighted and feel very privileged to have the opportunity to direct Meryl and Julia in this magnificent piece written by Tracy Letts," said Wells. "Meryl's extraordinary body of work made her the only conceivable choice to play Violet. Coupled with Julia's effortless mastery of every role she undertakes and her fearlessness as an actress, I'm confident this first ever collaboration with Meryl and Julia will produce an exciting and moving film."
AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY tells the dark, hilarious and deeply touching story of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose lives have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. Letts' play made its Broadway debut in December 2007 after premiering at Chicago's legendary Steppenwolf Theatre earlier that year. It continued with a successful international run.
Streep has been cast as pill-popping matriarch Violet Weston, and Roberts will play her complicated adult daughter Barbara. Streep has been nominated for the 2012 Best Actress Academy Award® for THE IRON LADY, and recently won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe Award® for her performance.

UGGIE RETIRES AFTER THE OSCARS

THE ARTIST's dog, Uggie, "announced" that he will retire from showbizz after the Oscars. Actually, that was what his trainer said. Last night, Uggie won the Golden Collar Award, betting Blackie from HUGO.

From The Telegraph:
The ceremony Monday at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel proceeded like a traditional Hollywood-style awards show. Actors including "NCIS" star Pauley Perrette and "Hot in Cleveland" star Wendie Malick presented trophies for the best dog performances on the big and small screens.

Uggie, the four-legged star of "The Artist," was named top dog in a movie. His owner-trainer, Omar Von Muller, was on hand to accept the award.

Von Muller said the Jack Russell terrier, who stole hearts in the silent film that’s up for 10 Academy Awards, is a “great performer, but he’s also a great family member.”

“He sleeps with us,” Von Muller said.

The Golden Collar Awards, dreamed up by Alan Siskind of the website dognewsdaily.com, drew other stars of “The Artist,” including James Cromwell and Missi Pyle, as well as studio representatives and media outlets from around the world.

“I’m delighted to be here because I owe my career to a pig,” said Cromwell, who played the farmer in “Babe.”

The ceremony walked a fine line between being a farce of an awards show and a meaningful recognition of dog and trainer achievements. Proceedings were broadcast online by the Hollywood Reporter, and Siskind said he expects the ceremony to be televised next year.

Martin Scorsese, who wrote an editorial in the Los Angeles Times that inspired a write-in campaign for the Doberman in his Oscar-nominated movie “Hugo,” appeared at the ceremony by video. His star dog, Blackie, lost out to Uggie, who was nominated twice in his category (for both “The Artist” and “Water for Elephants.”)

Other winners included French bulldog Brigitte, who plays Stella on TV’s “Modern Family,” and Hercules of “Pit Boss,” who tied with Giggy of “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” for best dog in a reality television series.

Their respective owners accepted the awards. Shorty Rossi, star of “Pit Boss,” noted, “This is the first time a pit bull’s been nominated for anything.”

Elizabeth Snead, an entertainment journalist who served as a Golden Collar judge, said the dog-awards show is more exciting than the Oscars.

“Everybody identifies with the dogs,” she said, holding her Maltese, Posey. “And it makes it more accessible for humans who don’t really care about awards season.”

MERYL WILL WIN 3RD OSCAR BECAUSE...

I wrote last month that Clooney was not a lock for best actor. Last night, BAFTA proved that Jean Dujardin is the real frontrunner: he won Cannes, Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA and he will win the Oscar. He will have the big five of the movie awards and he will be the first.

I also wrote that the best actress race is the most exciting this year. I predicted that it would be difficult for Meryl to win the SAG, because she won with DOUBT. But I also said that the BAFTA, in the last 5 years, seem to be a better Oscar predictor than the SAG. "And Meryl will definitely win the BAFTA for her portrait as Margaret Thatcher. Even if Viola wins the SAG, Meryl can easily gain momentum after the SAG and, with a BAFTA in her hand, she can get her third Oscar", I wrote.

I said everybody were underestimating 2 things, and I add other more:

1) Academy loves biopics and Meryl plays the real Margaret Thatcher. Academy loves protraits of real people and the past years prove it: Colin Firth, Sandra Bullock, Sean Penn, Marion Cotillard, Forest Whitaker, Helen Mirren, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Reese Withersoon, Jamie Foxx, Charlize Theron, Adrien Brody, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Hilary Swank are examples. Penn won over Rourke, Cotillard over Christie... We have to major exceptions: Jeff Bridges over Morgan Freeman - not a great Mandela; Denzel over Russell Crowe - he won the previous year.

2) Harvey Weinstein is always Harvey Weinstein. This is the guy that gave the Oscar to Roberto Benigni, Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, Michael Caine, etc... and he will give it to Dujardin and to Streep.

3) Meryl has the Oscar performance. Academy loves fireworks and Streep's portrait of Thatcher is all about fireworks.

4) No Oscar love for THE IRON LADY? The movie is a lock for best makeup.

P.S.: BTW, if it was Glenn Close or other actress to do Thatcher the way Streep did, wasn't Close a lock for best actress? Why Meryl isn't?

BEST SUPP ACTRESS AND DOUBLE NODS

A funny thing happened this year. Double supporting actress nominees for the same movie. Seems normal? Yes, but did you notice it's a fourth time this happens in a row? It's the second time this happens in Oscar history. The last time was between 1947 and 1950. Here are the last 4 years:

2011 - Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer for THE HELP
2010 - Amy Adams and Melissa Leo for THE FIGHTER
2009 - Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga for UP IN THE AIR
2008 - Amy Adams and Viola Davis for DOUBT

But, funny thing, since 2000, double supporting actress had happened 4 times:
2006 - Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi for BABEL
2002 - Catherine Zeta-Jones and Queen Latifah for CHICAGO
2001 - Helen Mirren and Maggie Smith for GOSFORD PARK
2000 - Kate Hudson and Frances McDormand for ALMOST FAMOUS

8 times in 12 years!!! And, before that, in 84 years of Oscars, that happened had happened many times, like no other acting category:
1994 - Jennifer Tilly and Dianne Wiest for BULLETS OVER BROADWAY
1989 - Lena Olin and Anjelica Huston for ENEMIES: A LOVE STORY
1988 - Joan Cusack and Sigourney Weaver for WORKING GIRL
1985 - Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery for THE COLOR PURPLE
1982 - Teri Garr and Jessica Lange for TOOTSIE
1979 - Meryl Streep and Jane Alexander for KRAMER VS. KRAMER
1973 - Tatum O'Neal and Madeline Kahn for PAPER MOON
1971 - Cloris Leachman and Ellen Burstyn for THE LAST PICTURE SHOW
1970 - Helen Hayes and Maureen Stapleton for AIRPORT
1965 - Joyce Redman and Maggie Smith for OTHELLO
1963 - (THREE) Joyve Redman, Diane Cilento and Dame Edith Evans for TOM JONES
1957 - Hope Lange and Diane Varsi for PEYTON PLACE
1956 - Eileen Heckhart and Patty McCormack for THE BAD SEED
1954 - Jan Sterling and Claire Trevor for THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY
1950 - Celeste Holm and Thelma Ritter for ALL ABOUT EVE
1949 - Celeste Holm and Elsa Lanchaster for COME TO THE STABLE
1948 - Barbara Bel Geddes and Ellen Corby for I REMEMBER MAMA
1947 - Celeste Holm and Anne Revere for GENTLEMEN'S AGREEMENT
1945 - Eve Arden and Ann Blyth for MILDRED PIERCE
1943 - Gladys Cooper and Anne Revere for THE SONG OF BERNADETTE
1942 - Teresa Wright and Dame May Whitty for MRS. MINIVER
1941 - Teresa Wright and Patricia Collidge for LITTLE FOXES
1939 - Hattie McDaniel and Olivia De Havilland for GONE WITH THE WIND

It's not even comparable with best supporting actor. Why this happens often a lot?

84th Academy Awards® Nominations Announced

Beverly Hills, CA – Nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced today (Tuesday, January 24) by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2010 Oscar® nominee Jennifer Lawrence.

Sherak and Lawrence, who was nominated for an Academy Award® for her lead performance in “Winter’s Bone,” announced the nominees in 10 of the 24 Award categories at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference attended by more than 400 international media representatives. Lists of nominations in all categories were then distributed to the media in attendance and online via the official Academy Awards website, www.oscar.com.

Academy members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominations are selected by vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.

Nominations ballots were mailed to the 5,783 voting members in late December and were returned directly to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the international accounting firm, for tabulation.

Official screenings of all motion pictures with one or more nominations will begin for members this weekend at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Screenings also will be held at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood and in London, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area.

All active and life members of the Academy are eligible to select the winners in all categories, although in five of them – Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject and Foreign Language Film – members can vote only if they have seen all of the nominated films in those categories.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network beginning at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

The OOPSIES are the awards for the worst among those who were supposed to be the best. One rule: only past Oscar winners or nominees can be nominated for an OOPSIE. You really have to vote for a past Oscar winner or contender who sucked badly this year.

We give them the name OOPSIES based on the expression "oopsy-daisy", which is "an exclamation made when encouraging a child to get up after a fall". That is what we want: encourage our great actors and directors to get up after a major flop.

Winners will be announced February 19th!
